G-Braves' success against Toledo continues

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Gwinnett Braves ran their record to 6-0 against the Toledo Mud Hens in 2013 with a 7-3 win Sunday night in Game 2 of the four-game series at Fifth-Third Field.

The G-Braves (56-74) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Alden Carrithers lined a two-out single to right in the top of the first off of Toledo starter Shawn Hill and scored from first when Ernesto Mejia pounded a double off the left-center field wall.

The Braves added runs in the top of the second off of Hill. Stefan Gartrell led off the inning with a walk and Joe Leonard followed with a single to center. A wild pitch by Hill moved the runners to second and third. Jose Yepez singled scoring Gartrell for a 2-0 lead, while Jose Constanza walked to load the bases. Todd Cunningham followed with a double, scoring both Leonard and Yepez to up the Gwinnett lead to 4-0, while Constanza come around to score for a 5-0 lead as Toledo shortstop Argenis Diaz committed an error on the relay throw from the outfield.

The Mud Hens (54-76) cut into the lead against Gwinnett starter Omar Poveda in the bottom of the second. Danny Dorn and Mike Cervenak led off the half inning with back-to-back singles. Danny Worth walked to load the bases with one out. Diaz singled to center with two outs, scoring both Dorn and Cervenak to make it 5-2.

Toledo added a run in the bottom of the sixth as Poveda walked Dorn, and an infield single by Cervenak put runners on first and second. The runners moved up on a throwing error by Leonard. Worth walked to load the bases, and the G-Braves pulled Poveda in favor of Andrew Russell out of the bullpen. Russell got John Murrian to hit into a force play at second that allowed Dorn to score from third, cutting the Gwinnett lead to 5-3.

But in the top of the seventh, Gwinnett extended the lead as Tyler Greene doubled off of Hill to lead off the inning. Yepez grounded out to second, moving Greene to third and Constanza singled to center scoring Greene for a 6-3 lead. Cunningham singled to right scoring Constanza from first for the final run of the game at 7-3.

Poveda (W, 6-7) worked 5.1 innings for his first win since June 11. He gave up six hits, three earned runs with four walks and six strikeouts. Russell went 2.2 strong innings with one hit, one walk and four strikeouts. Juan Cedeno worked 1.0 with two strikeouts.

Hill (L, 4-14) went 6.1 innings with nine hits, six earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Former Kennesaw State star Kenny Faulk pitched 1.2 innings with one hit, two walks and two strikeouts. Robbie Weinhardt went 1.0 inning with one hit and one strikeout.

Offensively for the G-Braves, Cunningham was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Mejia was also 2-for-5. Every player in the batting order for Gwinnett had a least one hit.

For the Mud Hens, Cervenak was 2-for-4, Hernan Perez was 2-for-4 and Diaz was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

The G-Braves and Mud Hens play Game 3 of the four-game series Monday night in Toledo. The Braves will pitch Kameron Loe (4-3, 3.00). The Mud Hens will start Blaine Hardy (4-1, 2.57). First pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
