Meeting scheduled about Suwanee police accreditation

SUWANEE —The public is invited to a meeting on Tuesday about the Suwanee Police Department’s policies and procedures.

The city’s police department is seeking a national re-accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. A team of assessors are scheduled to visit the city today to examine the department’s management, operations and support services.

Chief Mike Jones said in a press release that verification from the voluntary process is a “highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence.

The public information session is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Crossroads Center at 323 Buford Highway. Comments can be left by phone from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday at 770-904-7655. There is a 10-minute limit for comments on the phone and at the meeting. They must address SPD’s ability to comply with CALEA standards.

The CALEA program manager for the Suwanee Police Department is Vincent Dauro. The assessment team has public safety practitioners from similar but out-of-state agencies. Assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other locations where compliance can be witnessed.

The assessors for Suwanee are director Bob Morgan and retired Lt. John Tucker. After review, CALEA assessors report back to the full commission, which then decides if the agency is granted accredited status.

There are 418 standards, and Jones said CALEA is the benchmark for professional standards a law enforcement agency needs to meet.

The accreditation period is three years when a recognized agency must submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with those standards under which it was accredited.

A copy of the standards is available from the Suwanee Police Department at 373 Buford Highway. For more information, contact Lt. Dan Clark at dclark@suwanee.com or 770-904-7605.
