YOUTH ROUNDUP: 16U Vipers win ASA national title

Southern Force team members are Haley Short, Gabby Teran, Bailey Martin, Allison Roach, Lauren Prescott, Lexi Young, Erin Wilbur, Jameson Kavel, Emily Harris, Sarah Beam, Kayla Poynter and Madolyn Packer. The team is coached by Chris Wilbur, Chris Short and Travis Martin.

The 16U Atlanta Vipers won the ASA national title in Sunnyvale, Calif. This USA ASA national tournament had 138 of the best teams from across the country participating. Teams had to qualify at their state or district level to be eligible to participate. The Vipers went 10-0 and averaged more than 10 runs per game. The team batting average was .416 during the tournament against some of the top 16U pitchers in the country.

The team also won the Georgia ASA 16U State Title and the Scenic City 16U Summer Showcase Title in Chattanooga, Tenn., which hosted many of the top 16U teams from around the country.

Four of the players have Gwinnett County ties with Morgan Bell (Mill Creek), Kinsley Jennings (North Gwinnett), Reagan Morgan (Collins Hill) and Laine Simmons (Collins Hill) on the team.

The head coach is Todd Jennings and the assistant coach is Mike Bell.

SOFTBALL

Southern Force

claim national title

The 14U Southern Force-Wilbur team went undefeated in bracket play at the Class A Eastern National Championships in York, Pennsylvania on July 31 through Aug. 5. They beat teams from Alabama, Georgia, New York, North Carolina and Ohio. In the championship game, the Southern Force squared up against another Georgia team, the East Cobb Athletics-Batchelor. The Southern Force won the game 12-4 in six innings. Southern Force was 8-0 in the tournament and East Cobb was 6-2.

Both teams earned a berth to next year’s 14U Class A National Championship which will be held in San Diego, Calif.

East Cobb team members are Conner Batchelor, Allie Head, Mariah Briney, Karley Hobbs, Gabby Benson, Lizzy Hellsten, Sierra Smith, Kelsey Bennett, Krista Roe, Maura Grace Dickens, Hannah Turnbull and Bianca Rudnik. The team is coached by Bill Batchelor, Ken Hobbs, Andre Briney and Rick Hellsten.

VOLLEYBALL

Gwinnett duo win tournament title

Two of Gwinnett County’s own represented the area and themselves well at the Atlanta Open Sand Volleyball Tournament this summer.

Greater Atlanta Christian’s Cienna Townson and Collins Hill’s Sabrina Saveedra of Lawrenceville teamed up to win the 14U championship held at Georgia State Sports Arena in Atlanta.

The two were teammates on their AAU GA5 indoor volleyball team that practices out of Suwanee Sports Academy.
