Gwinnett Braves left-hander Yohan Flande has been named the International League’s Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 29 to Aug. 5, the league office announced Monday. The IL weekly award is the first for Flande, a veteran of three seasons with the G-Braves.
Flande, 27, went 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA (3 ER in 17.0 IP), no walks and 13 strikeouts across two starts last week. On July 29, he pitched a nine-inning complete game at Charlotte, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits as Gwinnett cruised to an 8-3 victory. That effort made him the first G-Brave to throw a nine-inning complete game since right-hander Julio Teheran did it on June 3, 2012, also at Knights Stadium.
On Sunday, Flande nearly went the distance again at Durham, pitching eight innings with a run on three hits, no walks and eight strikeouts. The outing secured his third-straight win and led the G-Braves to a 4-1 victory over the Bulls, the club’s first win in 10 tries at Durham Bulls Athletic Park this year.
For the season, Flande is 7-6 with a 4.42 ERA (53 ER in 108.0 IP) in 26 games, 16 starts for Gwinnett. During his three-year career as a G-Brave dating back to 2011, he’s 21-25 with a 4.19 ERA (183 ER in 392.2 IP) in 88 games, 62 starts.
Flande is the second Gwinnett player to win a weekly award this year, joining former G-Braves’ right-hander Tim Corcoran (IL Pitcher of the Week, May 20-26).
The Gwinnett Braves open a five-game, four-day series against the Norfolk Tides in Norfolk, Va., on Monday night. The series opener will be a doubleheader at Harbor Park beginning at 6:05 p.m. In Game 1, the G-Braves will start right-hander Cody Martin (2-2, 2.89), while the Tides will counter with right-hander Eddie Gamboa (0-2, 7.58). Right-hander Joe Bisenius (3-4, 4.91) will start Game 2 for Gwinnett, while Norfolk has yet to announce a starter for the second game.
