Ga. boy dies after being struck by police cruiser

McDONOUGH -- A 14-year-old boy died from his injuries after being struck by a police car while riding his bicycle, authorities said.

Chandler Jacob Weems died about 9:30 a.m. at Henrietta Egleston Hospital for Children, Henry County Coroner Donald Cleveland said.

The Georgia State Patrol investigated the crash. According to a report, the accident occurred about 12:25 p.m. on North Ola Road.

Henry County Police Officer Denise Allyson Romano, 35, was traveling north when Weems, riding his bicycle westbound, entered her lane of travel from a driveway. Police said Romano swerved to avoid hitting the boy, but was unable to avoid an accident.

Romano has been placed on leave pending the completion of the investigation into the crash, Henry County Police Sgt. Joey Smith said. He offered his condolences to Weems' family on behalf of his department.
