GOOD NEWS: Local students are National Achievement Scholars

SUWANEE -- Out of 800 students recently named National Achievement Scholars nationwide, 17 hail from Gwinnett County Public Schools.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced its Class of 2013 recipients of the National Achievement Scholarship, a program which provides scholarships to outstanding black American high school students.

These high school seniors are considered as having the strongest record of accomplishments and greatest potential for academic success in college.

The students include the following:

-- Michelle Ramos, Berkmar High; Probable career field: Writing; National Achievement $2,500 Scholarship

-- Naana D. Obeng-Marnu, Brookwood High; Probable career field: Architecture; National Achievement $2,500 Scholarship

-- Ruth Amsel Melka, Brookwood High; Probable career field: Neurology; National Achievement $2,500 Scholarship

-- Jamani Iasha Smith, Brookwood High; Probable career field: Medicine; National Achievement $2,500 Scholarship

North Gwinnett High cadet gets award

SUGAR HILL -- Cadet Lauren Cromie -- daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Cromie of Sugar Hill -- recently received the Military Officer Association of America award from Col. Donald Brown, U.S. Army Retired, of the Georgia Mountain Chapter during ceremonies of the North Gwinnett High School Junior ROTC program.

Cromie received a medal, certificate, Challenge Coin and a $100 scholarship award.

The award recognizes a cadet in his/her junior year who has demonstrated the potential for leadership. Cromie has a superior grade average and is active in her church and as a member of the Gwinnett Student Leadership Team.
