Lawrenceville native Jimmy Maurer was one of three players who have signed with the New York Cosmos, the club announced Friday.
Maurer, 24, joins the team, which will begin play in the North American Soccer League later this year, after playing last year with Universidad de Concepcion in the Chilean Primera Divison. He played locally with the Atlanta Silverbacks in 2011, recording 91 saves in 1,531 minutes with a 2.41 goals allowed average. He was selected fourth overall by the New York Red Bulls in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft.
"Jimmy has a lot of experience for his age. He's very reliable with good composure and demeanor in the net," Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said in a release.
Maurer played collegiately at South Carolina, where he started all 78 games in his career and recorded 28 shutouts, the second most in Gamecock history.
He earned All-Conference USA and Conference USA Freshman of the Year honors in his career. Maurer played in high school at St. Pius X.
