When Michelle Fortier transferred to a Canadian prep school after last spring, it left a major hole in the Peachtree Ridge offense.

Fortier, then a junior, scored a county-record 102 goals last season and helped the Lions win the area championship.

With Fortier gone, the Lions had to find another way to manufacture goals this season. The result has been the relationship of Darby Frisbie and Kayla Jones.

Frisbie has taken over as the team's leading goal scorer thanks to Jones. The senior leads the county in assists and many of them have set up goals for Frisbie.

"I always thank her because she always gives me all my goals and stuff," Frisbie said. "She leads me to goals because she makes good passes."

Jones is quick to not take all the credit, knowing she wouldn't have as many assists if it weren't for Frisbie's prolific goal scoring.

"I always know where she is in the field. We kind of know how each other plays," Jones said. "I know I can count on her. She knows where my passes are going to be and I know where she's going to be, so it works out."

Frisbie and Jones' relationship has helped lead Peachtree Ridge to another strong season. The Lions will play Mill Creek on Wednesday for the area championship.

"They are both team players," Peachtree Ridge coach Michael Thomas said. "They fill their role."

Frisbie leads the team in goals with 55 and has nine assists.

"Darby, even though she has a lot of goals and not quite as many assists, she's not a ball hog," Thomas said. "She normally passes it to Kayla, who turns around and gives it back. It works out."

Jones leads the county in assists with 46 and also has 32 goals.

"She has really good stick skills and is able to place the ball where she wants to," Thomas said. "She kind of controls the offense. She's very patient, she doesn't force passes in. She's going to wait for opportunities."

Jones grew up playing softball, but got burned out on the sport. She went out for lacrosse as a sophomore and showed a lot of potential.

"When she first came out, I thought she could be a great player," Frisbee said. "I saw her play softball. I knew she was a good athlete."

Frisbie grew up playing just about every sport -- tennis, swimming, softball, soccer and cheerleading. She finally settled on lacrosse when she got to middle school.

"This one stuck. This was my favorite. I really love lacrosse," Frisbie said.

Frisbie and Jones' relationship has developed slowly over the last two years. It didn't hit full stride until a tournament earlier this season.

"As the season progressed, we learned how to play better with each other," Jones said.

Over the last six games Frisbie has scored 33 goals, while Jones has 29 assists.

"It has been a lot easier with Kayla. Kayla is always going to be there. She knows where I am and all that," Frisbie said. "It's like having Michelle back, but in an assist form with Kayla."

The combination of Frisbie and Jones has made up for the departure of Fortier. They each have put up big numbers this season thanks to one another and it has only benefited the team.

"If she wasn't on the team, it probably wouldn't be the same," Jones said. "It just goes hand in hand with everybody. We wouldn't be the same if one person wasn't there."
