LAWRENCEVILLE -- She said yes.

Six days after he and four colleagues were held hostage during a three-hour standoff, Gwinnett County firefighter Chip Echols told media members that he was planning on proposing to his girlfriend and that, after all that had transpired, she pretty much had to say yes.

She did.

Nancy Huggins, mother of bride-to-be Victoria, informed the Daily Post Wednesday that the couple got engaged over the weekend.

"It was extremely sweet and romantic and we cannot wait until the wedding," she wrote in an email.

Echols, a five-year veteran, and four fellow firefighters from Station No. 10 were held hostage for several hours on April 10, lured to the Suwanee home of Lauren Holman Brown by a staged 911 call about chest pains. Brown was ultimately shot and killed when a Gwinnett County police SWAT team stormed the home.

All of the firefighters emerged shaken but unscathed.

Echols had already scheduled to take his future in-laws out to dinner the next evening, with the idea of asking for Victoria's hand in marriage. He kept his promise and they granted their permission.

The couple has plans for a January wedding, Huggins said.

Congratulations. I always like to see happy stories that balance the glut of woe and tragedy that often permeate media reporting.

Don't do it...The publicity negates she say yes...Despite the "sunglasses on shaved head black tie over maroon shirt mistake"
