PREP ROUNDUP: GAC boys reach state lacrosse playoffs for first time

NORCROSS -- Greater Atlanta Christian qualified for the Class A/AAAAA state playoffs for the first time with a 13-10 win at home over North Springs on Tuesday night.

Whit Anderson accounted for more than half the offense for GAC (10-6, 8-1) with three goals and four assists, while Gunner Cape added three goals and an assist.

Matthew Roush also helped with three goals and eight ground balls.

BOYS LACROSSE

Mill Creek 15, Archer 1

HOSCHTON -- Mill Creek received at least one goal or assist from 15 different players on Tuesday night as the Hawks ran away with a 15-1 win over Archer.

Reed Stanton led the Hawks (14-3, 9-0) with three goals and two assists, while Alec Bussink added two goals and an assist.

Collins Hill 6, Grayson 5

LOGANVILLE -- Collins Hill keeper Cody Lewis saved 14 shots on Tuesday night in helping the Eagles hold off Grayson for a 6-5 win on Tuesday night.

Connor Pittman led the offense for Collins Hill (8-6) with two goals, while Andrew Martinez, Tim Singer, Zach Cao and Russell Gardner each scored one.

Wesleyan 18, Forsyth Central 0

NORCROSS -- Wesleyan evened its record at 7-7 with an 18-0 rout at home over Forsyth Central on Tuesday night.

Haydon Koch led the attack with five goals and an assist, while Ren Schmitt and Jake Miller each had three goals and two assists.

Matt Zimmerman added two goals and an assist, while Mile Laughlin finished with a pair of goals.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Mill Creek 23, Archer 2

HOSCHTON -- Mill Creek ran its record to 15-1 on Tuesday with a 23-2 win at home over Archer.

Tori Windom led the way with five goals and two assists, while Rachel Gann added four goals and one assist. Other standouts were Maddie Peek (three goals, assist), Mackenzie Fagioli (three goals, assist), Lara Russell (three assists), Tyler Rediger (goal, three assists) and Maddie Beck (three goals, five assists).

North 12, Duluth 5

SUWANEE -- Eight different players scored for North Gwinnett on Tuesday night as the Bulldogs beat Duluth 12-5.

Jack Ryan, Sam Gasta, Luke Printz and Spencer Howie each scored two goals for North (14-2, 8-1), while Tyler Ortolano, Colton Garvin, Nathan Howell and Dan Constant each scored one.

Zach Retsky had five saves at keeper for North.

Wesleyan 18, Forsyth Central 6

NORCROSS -- Natalie Genthert put in six goals on Tuesday night in leading Wesleyan to an 18-6 win at home over Forsyth Central.

Victoria DiStasi led the defense at mid fielder, while Meredith DiStasi had eight saves at keeper. Wesleyan improved to 9-7.

BASEBALL

Wesleyan 15, Hapeville Charter 0

NORCROSS -- Trey Mannion of Wesleyan threw a no-hitter on Tuesday night as the Wolves blanked Hapeville Charter 15-0 in four innings in a Region 6-AA game.

Mannion went all four innings, striking out eight in notching the no-no.

Offensively, Wesleyan (13-9, 6-4) was led by Jahmai Jones, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Sam Carver also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Brandon Moss (2-for-3) and Ty Maughon (hit, two RBIs) each chipped in.

Providence 8, Commerce 3

LILBURN -- Erich Stahl of Providence went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs on Tuesday in leading the Storm 8-3 over Commerce.

Max Broom added two hits with an RBI and a run, while Charlie Scott finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a run and a stolen base.

Zach Meier was the winning pitcher, going 5 innings with no earned runs allowed with three hits and a strikeout. The win improved Providence to 14-10 overall and 14-3 in Region 8B-A.

Hebron 11, Athens Academy 5

ATHENS -- Caleb Martin and Tyler Calvert each had a hit and two RBIs on Tuesday night in helping Hebron to an 11-5 at Athens Academy.

The Lions (11-11, 10-6) also received two hits and two RBIs from Brady Shoppe, while Nathan Holt finished 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Drew Coker was the winning pitcher, allowing no earned runs in three innings work. Michael Duffling also pitched well in relief, delivering 2 innings with no earned runs.

BOYS SOCCER

Collins Hill 2, Peachtree Ridge 0

SUWANEE -- Collins Hill locked up the Region 7-AAAAAA title on Tuesday night with a 2-0 shutout at Peachtree Ridge. The Eagles (13-5, 7-1) will host West Forsyth in the first round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs next Wednesday.

Eli Carrasco and Juan Romero each scored for Collins Hill, while Jackson Taylor earned the shutout at keeper.

Grayson 2, Salem 2

CONYERS -- Grayson finished its 2013 regular season with a 2-2 tie at Salem on Tuesday night.

Scoring for the Rams (7-9-1) were Ernesto Delgado and Bayian Yahya.

Mill Creek 3, Alpharetta 2 OT

ALPHARETTA -- Mill Creek played its final game of 2013 on Tuesday night and came away with a 3-2 in overtime at Alpharetta. Mill Creek ended its season at 12-5.

Waldyr Pierre-Louis, Tyler Moody and Noah Thomas each scored for Mill Creek, all off assists from Billy Johnson.

Lovett 4, Wesleyan 1

ATLANTA -- Wesleyan concluded its regular season with a 4-1 loss at Lovett. Despite the loss, Wesleyan (6-9-2, 1-5) will play in the Class AA state playoffs on the road next Friday as the No. 4 seed out of Region 6-AA.

Cort Coxhead provided the lone goal for Wesleyan when he scored on a free kick.

Berkmar 4, Meadowcreek 2

NORCROSS -- Berkmar ended its regular season with a 4-2 win at Meadowcreek on Tuesday night.

Helping in the scoring for the Patriots (12-5-1) were Alex Ramos, Rocky Guerra, Juan Sierra and Awey Houry. Kwasi Abudafor, Israel Lopez and Guerra also each had an assist.

The Region 8-AAAAAA champs will host Etowah next Wednesday to open the Class AAAAAA state playoffs.

Providence 6, George Walton 1

LILBURN -- Tylor Marshall and Bokwon Lee scored two goals each on Tuesday night in leading Providence to a 6-1 win over visiting George Walton Academy. Providence will open the Class A state playoffs next Friday, either at home as the No. 2 seed or on the road as the No. 3 seed, depending on the outcome of Lakeview's match on Tuesday.

Jake Freeman and Collin Moncrief also scored one goal each in the win for the Storm (8-8-1, 5-3).

GIRLS SOCCER

Collins Hill 1, Peachtree Ridge 0

SUWANEE -- Collins Hill locked up the No. 2 seed in Region 7-AAAAAA with a 1-0 shutout at Peachtree Ridge on Tuesday night. Collins Hill (13-3-2, 5-2) will be at home next week in the first round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs.

Jessica Dacey scored with about 17 minutes left off an assist from Desiree Bowen for match's lone goal.

Halla Jibreen had the shutout at keeper to lead the defensive effort the Eagles.

Berkmar 4, Meadowcreek 2

NORCROSS Berkmar closed out its 2013 season in strong fashion with a 4-2 win at Meadowcreek on Tuesday night.

Raven Matthews logged two goals in the win, while Amy Adame and June Orocio each scored a goal. Vivian Santana also helped Berkmar (4-11, 3-5) with an assist.

Meadowcreek (7-11), which also concluded its season, received one goal each from Miriam Martinez and Rachel Hill.

Roswell 2, North 1

ROSWELL -- North Gwinnett ended its regular season with a 2-1 loss at Roswell on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs (8-9, 5-3) will travel to the No. 1 seed from Region 6-AAAAAA next Tuesday for the first round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs.

Mountain View 4, East Hall 0

GAINESVILLE -- Mountain View ended its season with a 4-0 shutout on the road at East Hall on Tuesday night.

The Bears (8-8) received two goals from Ashley Lewis, while Alex Felger and Brittany Doyle each scored one.

Katie Darby and Sam Moore split time at keeper for the shutout.

Mill Creek 1, Alpharetta 0

ALPHARETTA -- Lauren Tanner scored midway through the second half, giving Mill Creek all the offense it would need as the Hawks posted a 1-0 shutout at Alpharetta on Tuesday night in a non-region battle.

The goal, which was Tanner's 33rd of the year, was assisted by Ellie Bowes. The shutout was preserved at keeper by Rachel Allred and Caroline Youngblood, who combined for seven saves.

Lanier 3, Stephens Co. 0

TOCCOA -- Lanier finished its Region 8-AAAA schedule a perfect 8-0 with a 3-0 shutout at Stephens County on Tuesday night.

Maddie Corley, Andrea Araya and Tori Wyant each had a goal for Lanier (12-5 overall), while Adri Ramos and Alyssa Santana each had assists. Emily Polanco also had seven saves at keeper.

Lanier will be at home next Tuesday against LaGrange in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs.

GAC 2, Westminster 1

ATLANTA -- Greater Atlanta Christian had already locked up the Region 6-AA championship, and the Spartans showed no signs of letting up as GAC clipped Westminster 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday night.

GAC (15-1, 6-0) scored 38 seconds into the match when Mollie Arrendale scored off an assist from Taylor Wagnon.

Westminster tied the score late in the first half off a penalty kick but GAC took the match when Kaylann Boyd scored unassisted with 1:41 left in the second overtime. GAC will open the Class AA state playoffs at home next Thursday.

Providence 5, George Walton 1

LILBURN -- Providence sewed up second place in Region 8-A on Tuesday night with a solid 5-1 win at home over George Walton Academy. The Storm (13-5, 6-2) will open the Class A state playoffs at home next Thursday.

Katharine Slayton led Providence with two goals, while Emily Askew, Brittany Tuttle and Rai Laird each scored one.

BOYS TENNIS

Peachtree Ridge 3, Alpharetta 0

SUWANEE -- Peachtree Ridge ran its record to 14-3 with a 3-0 sweep of Alpharetta on Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs.

The Lions received their points from Alex Makarenko at No. 1 singles, Taylor Foote and Niki Makarenko at No. 1 doubles and Alex Reed and Collin Greeff at No. 2 doubles.

Brookwood 3, Lassiter 0

SNELLVILLE -- Drew Wendel won at No. 1 singles, while Zach Jennings won in the No. 2 slot on Tuesday afternoon as Brookwood took down Lassiter 3-0 in the first round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs.

The Broncos also received help from a win at No. 1 doubles by Matt Jones and Will McWhirt.

Lambert 3, Collins Hill 1

SUWANEE -- Collins Hill was bumped from the Class AAAAAA state playoffs with a 3-1 loss in the first round at Lambert on Tuesday.

The Eagles, who finished their season at 13-7, received their point with a No. 2 singles win by Evan Padvorac.

Wesleyan 5, Pepperell 0

NORCROSS -- Wesleyan had no problems in its Class AA state playoff opening round match on Tuesday as the Wolves blanked visiting Pepperell 5-0.

Jeffrey Chang, Austin Zakas and Palmer Brasher were each victorious in their singles matches, while the doubles teams of Cole Brown and Andre Dorman (No. 1) and Cameron Anderson and Tucker Cannon (No. 2) also won.

Providence 3, Tallulah Falls 2

ATHENS Providence closed out its Region 8-A tournament with a 3-2 win over Tallulah Falls at Athens Academy on Tuesday night, giving the Storm a third-place finish.

Providence picked up all its points in the singles competition, getting wins from Jon North, Emory Williams and Clayton Cheek.

Providence, which reached the Class A state tournament for the first time in four years, will open the tournament on the road at North Cobb on Thursday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Peachtree Ridge 3, Alpharetta 0

DULUTH -- Peachtree Ridge logged one doubles win and two singles wins as the Lions topped Alpharetta 3-0 in the first round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs at Sugarloaf on Tuesday afternoon.

Doubles winners for the Lions (16-1) were Jena Kelly at No. 2 and Ali Mills at No. 3, while the No. 1 doubles team of Laura Kelly and Sreeja Choppara also won.

North 3, Johns Creek 0

SUWANEE -- North Gwinnett logged two doubles wins and one singles win on Tuesday to sweep Johns Creek 3-0 in the first round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs.

Haley Wix and Emma Etelalahti won at No. 1 doubles, while Jada Tijani and Madison Bolden took the No. 2 match.

North (18-3) also received a win at No. 2 singles from Isabel Balsavage.

Lanier 5, Shaw 0

SUGAR HILL -- Lanier opened the Class AAAA state tournament with a 5-0 sweep at home over Shaw on Tuesday.

Megan Buchholz, Lauren Byrd and Carlie Overley each helped secure the win with singles victories, while the doubles teams of Jenna Soucia and Lindsey Wong at No. 1 and Victoria Inman and Meg McRee at No. 2 each added wins.

GAC 5, Calhoun 0

CALHOUN -- Remi Andre, Julia Bryan and Phoenix Gandy all won in singles play on Tuesday as part of Greater Atlanta Christian's 5-0 win at Calhoun in the first round of the Class AA state playoffs.

Adding doubles wins for the Spartans were Rachel Chupp and Jenny Armstrong at No. 1 and Meghan Mitchell and Stephanie Collins at No. 2.

Athens Academy 3, Providence 2

ATHENS -- It came down to a deciding third set, but Providence fell short as the Storm lost 3-2 to Athens Academy in the finals of the Region 8-A tournament at Athens Academy. Providence will open the Class A state tournament at home on Thursday as the No. 2 seed out of the region.

Winners for Providence were Vani Crist at No. 1 singles and Maryellyn Brannon at No. 3 singles.

BOYS GOLF

Wesleyan's Solomon wins 6-AA boys tourney

AUSTELL -- Cody Solomon of Wesleyan shot a 75 on Tuesday afternoon and topped the field with a win in a playoff hole to take the individual title of the Region 6-AA tournament at Dogwood.

Solomon's 75 led the Wolves to a fourth-place finish in the team standings with a 335, bolstered by a 77 from Nick Ross, who was third in the individual race.

Wesleyan qualified for the Class AA state sectionals on May 6 at Blueberry Plantation in Alma.

GAC boys third in Region 6-AA

AUSTELL -- Greater Atlanta Christian secured a spot in the Class AA state sectionals with a third-place finish in the Region 6-AA tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Dogwood.

The Spartans, who finished with 323, were led by a 77 from Ben Shipp, which was good enough for fourth in the individual standings. Alex Kim followed that with an 80.

The sectional tournament will be at Blueberry Plantation in Alma on May 6.

GAC also posted a third-place finish on Saturday in the Falcons Invitational at the Reunion Club by shooting 319, six shots behind winner Flowery Branch and three shots from the second-place finisher Walton.

Shipp took the low-medalist honors in the individual standings with a 1-over 73. Reagan Cink and Steffan Smith also shot well by each shooting 80.

GIRLS GOLF

GAC girls win 6-AA tournament

AUSTELL -- Greater Atlanta Christian won the Region 6-AA team tournament on Tuesday afternoon by shooting 175 at Dogwood.

Bailey Tardy also won the individual title, leading the Spartans with an 80.

Tardy's region crown was fresh off the heels of her win in the Falcons Invitational on Saturday at the Reunion Club, where she took low-medalist honors with an even-par 72.

The Spartans finished with a 249 to win the team competition of nine squads. Also helping in the win were Elizabeth Mizell with an 87 and Kathryn Fazekas with a 90.
