Commissioners on Tuesday approved the hiring of part-time staffers to help process weapons carry permits in the Probate Court.
Probate Judge Chris Ballar said permit applications are on pace to nearly double last year's total, after recent mass shootings and Second Amendment debates.
The surge has not only created long lines but a backlog in processing other documents, including birth, marriage and death certificates, he said.
Commissioners approved a $39,000 budget amendment to allow for four part-time, temporary staffers to address the issue.
