ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Pedro Mendes scored his second goal Saturday night in the 70th minute, completing the Atlanta Silverbacks' comeback from two goals down for a 4-3 victory against the defending league champion Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Ruben Luna brought Atlanta (2-0-0, 6 points) even in the 63rd minute. He beat the Rowdies' defense to a ball played over the top and poked the ball past goalkeeper Andrew Fontein to knot the score at 3-3.
Tampa Bay (1-1-1, 4 points) scored first in the eighth minute off a goal from Evans Frimpong. The midfielder took a ball from Luke Mulholland and put it by goalkeeper Joe Nasco for the 1-0 advantage.
Central grad Borfor Carr assisted Luna on Atlanta's first score, which tied the game at 1-1 midway through the first half. Carr crossed the ball toward Luna, and the former FC Dallas forward knocked it home for the goal.
Mulholland scored twice more for the Rowdies to take a 3-1 halftime lead. He finished a cross from Georgi Hristov a minute after Luna's first goal to put Tampa Bay back up 2-1. In the 42nd minute, he put a free kick past Nasco from 20 yards out for a two-goal lead.
Mendes scored his first goal of the game just nine minutes into the second half. Richie Menjivar played a ball to Mendes, who fired a shot from about 30 yards out to bring Atlanta back to within a goal at 3-2.
