Lilburn recycling day to help nonprofits

LILBURN -- Next weekend, Lilburn residents will have the opportunity to help with the "Great American Clean Up."

In celebration of Earth Day, the city is hosting a recycling event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Participants can bring pretty much anything they want to dispose of, with both recycling receptacles and Dumpsters scheduled to be out at the City Hall's overflow parking lot at 76 Main St.

Many of the items will be reused by local nonprofits, a press release said.

The city will give all donated cellphones to Zoo Atlanta's Call4Gorillas Partner Program. The city hopes to receive 200 phones for the program. Information is available at www.zooatlanta.org/cell_recycling.

Clean towels and wash cloths will be given to the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter.

People can also bring documents for shredding (by A1 Shredding and Recycling), scrap metal (removal provided by Widenation Recycling) and electronics (provided by CompuPoint USA). Residents can also bring up to five tires per person, with recycling provided by Liberty Tire Recycling.

Businesses are welcome to participate in all recycling opportunities, except for tire recycling, the release said.

The Dumpsters tend to fill up fast, officials said, so items will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Construction materials will not be accepted.
