Grayson, state agree on sales tax procedure

GRAYSON -- The Grayson City Council agreed Monday night to join forces with the Georgia Department of Revenue to ensure the proper payment of sales tax in the city.

"The Georgia Municipal Association and Gwinnett County wants this to get a handle on the sales tax," Mayor Jim Hinkle said. "Long term, it's going to be a real good thing." He added that the city has wanted to get information of how to do this for a long time.

GMA wants 100 percent of the cities in Gwinnett to participate in this procedure. This will apply to new businesses opening during the calendar year.

In other business, the council agreed to a contract with Sophicity for its "IT in a Box" program. The program, which will cost the city $450 per month, will feature two IT websites and seven emails. "And that's a bargain," Councilman James Gillespie said.

"They (Sophicity) offered a whole lot more than I thought they would," Council Member Laurie Anderson said.

With the new system, such features as web calendars can be shared with several departments, such as City Hall and the Grayson History Center.

It also was announced that Gayle Moore was selected as director of the Grayson Downtown Development Authority, which will soon be housed in the 438 Building.
