Lucas Sims' second appearance for Class A Rome went a lot better than the first.
The Brookwood graduate, working out of the bullpen for now, allowed one hit and an unearned run in two innings against Greensboro on Tuesday in Rome, striking out one and walking none.
Sims' control and the results were a definite improvement over his first outing in the second game of the season at Savannah on April 5.
The 2012 first-round draft choice of the Atlanta Braves walked four over 1 innings in that game and was charged with four earned runs. He allowed two hits and struck out one.
Sims, who is one of the youngest players in the South Atlantic League, doesn't turn 19 until May 5 and will be eased into things at Rome.
After receiving a bonus of $1.65 million to bypass a scholarship to Clemson, Sims worked just 34 innings over 11 outings last year in rookie ball. The right-hander was a combined 2-4 with a 3.71 ERA and 39 strikeouts to 13 walks in the Gulf Coast and Appalachian leagues.
Sims is No. 5 on the Baseball America list of the top Braves prospects and is ranked No. 6 by MLB.com.
McHugh off to great start
The Class AAA Pacific Coast League is a tough place to pitch, but Collin McHugh didn't have any problems in his first two starts for Las Vegas.
McHugh, who made his major league debut with the New York Mets last season, won both outings for Las Vegas while posting a 0.73 ERA.
The former Providence Christian and Berry College standout allowed just eight hits and one earned run over 12 -1/2 innings. The right-hander struck out 12 and walked one.
McHugh, 25, pitched seven scoreless innings in his debut with the Mets last August.
Knee injury sidelines Plagman
Former Wesleyan and Georgia Tech standout Tony Plagman suffered a knee injury during offseason workouts and Detroit expects him to miss much of the 2013 season.
Plagman, 25, had three homers and eight RBIs in a game for Class AA Erie last year, but ended up hitting .229 with 13 homers and 56 RBIs in 112 games.
The outfielder-first baseman was a ninth-round draft pick of the Tigers in 2010 and led the Class A Advanced Florida State League with 97 RBIs in 2011.
Tice released by Indians
Dacula graduate and former College of Charleston slugger Jeremie Tice was released by Cleveland at the end of spring training.
Tice, 26, was limited to 16 games with Class AA Akron last season, landing on the disabled list just a couple weeks after being promoted from Class A Advanced Carolina. He had hit .282 with 12 homers and 47 RBIs in 52 games with the Mudcats.
Tice was a sixth-round draft choice of the Indians in 2008.
Snitker traded to Pirates
Troy Snitker is no longer in the same organization as his father, Atlanta third base coach Brian Snitker.
The 24-year-old catcher was traded to Pittsburgh near the end of spring training for future considerations.
The Brookwood graduate was a 19th-round draft choice out of North Georgia College in 2011 and hit .226 over 65 games in the Braves organization.
Reds release French
Justice French was released by Cincinnati after going a combined 4-4 with a 3.94 ERA in 28 games for Class A Dayton and Class A Advanced Bakersfield last year and ending the season on the disabled list.
The Collins Hill graduate was a 25th-round draft choice by the Reds out of Mercer University in 2011.
