LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Gwinnett County police officer who was shot during Wednesday's hostage situation involving local firefighters will likely be released from the hospital this weekend, officials said.
Police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said Friday that the SWAT team member -- shot in the forearm while storming the Suwanee home of Lauren Brown to free four Gwinnett firefighters -- is expected to make a full recovery and may be going home soon.
"I think the thought is he may be able to go home Saturday," Smith said, adding that the timeline could change.
After four Gwinnett County firefighters had been held hostage for about three hours Wednesday, the officer was one of several SWAT team members that stormed the home during a successful rescue attempt. He was shot by Brown before returning fire and killing him.
The officer underwent surgery Thursday morning. Authorities have asked that his identity not be released. All four firefighters held hostage were treated briefly at Gwinnett Medical Center Wednesday night before being released. A fifth firefighter was released by Brown early on in the standoff.
