Gas leak causes Duluth businesses to evacuate

DULUTH -- A gas leak evacuated several businesses and closed a major thoroughfare in both directions in Duluth on Monday.

Gwinnett firefighters responded at 11:16 a.m. to the leak outside 2870 Peachtree Industrial Blvd. NW near a strip shopping center and the Duluth Package store. The leak was caused by a construction crew that hit a two-inch gas line while boring in the area, Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.

About 15 people from six businesses were evacuated, but were allowed back to the businesses at about 1:30 p.m. shortly after the leak was stopped by a crew from Atlanta Gas Light, Rutledge said. Both lanes of PIB were reopened at about the same time, Rutledge said.

No injuries were reported.
