WINDER -- Barrow County fire officials have ruled a Thursday evening house fire an act of arson.

Crews were dispatched to the vacant two-story home on the 900 block of Downing Drive at about 6:45 p.m. Thursday after a 911 caller reported the blaze.

"Once on scene firefighters found a two-story home with heavy fire showing," Battalion Chief Mike Stoops said. "Crews made an aggressive attack on the fire to bring it under control."

The home, which had been vacant for over a year, officials said, sustained extensive damage in the blaze.

The fire was determined to be the result of arson. The investigation is being handled by the fire investigation team and the Barrow County Sheriff's Department, officials said.
