Before the newly founded Huntington Sea Dragons team can officially be a full member of the Gwinnett County Swim League, it must do alterations to the old neighborhood pool, like resurfacing and repainting.

The team, which will be the only GCSL squad within the Berkmar cluster, is in a competition that began Thursday for a prestigious grant that will help fund that expensive project.

Huntington is one of the finalists for the State Farm Neighborhood Assist Program, which provides 40 grants of $25,000 each to various communities in need. State Farm accepted 3,000 applications, then selected the top 200 finalists and Huntington made that final group.

Voting for the competition can be done only through State Farm's Facebook app and users can vote for Huntington up to 10 times a day through Facebook. Voting ends April 22.

What a great cause! Erica Porten and Polly Mitas are bulding a swim team at Berkmar High School and reaching out to younger children in the area through this summer swim team. Of the 30 kids that signed up for the Berkmar Patriots Swim Team last year, 20 of them had never learned to swim. This new team, The Huntington Sea Dragons, will teach kids to swim and compete before they get to the high school level. It's truly a great way to give kids something to do in the summer, make them safer around water and build character through sportsmanship.
