LAWRENCEVILLE -- With a big start to spring break this weekend, officials have hopes to keep the traffic from clogging too bad.
State transportation officials have limited lane closures from midnight Friday April 5 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, April 9. The respite comes when many local school systems, including Gwinnett, have planned spring break. Plus, major events in Atlanta include the opening weekend for the Atlanta Braves and the Final Four NCAA basketball tournament.
The limitation also applies to surface streets in the vicinity of the Georgia Dome due to the high volume expected for the basketball games.
The DOT has also limited interstate lane closures the following weekend, April 13 and 14, as people travel back from the beach or another vacation destination.
"Traffic is expected to be heavy throughout the state during this entire period," a press release said. "The Department reminds travelers to exercise caution as crews may be still be working in proximity to highways and safety concerns may require long-term lane closures to remain in place. Also, incident management or emergency, maintenance-related lane closures could become necessary at any time on any route."
