LAWRENCEVILLE -- Robert Walker has three children in the Grayson Cluster of Gwinnett County Public Schools, and he is a big fan of what they do there.
"The cluster sets a standard in everything," said Walker Thursday. "It carries over to all the schools in the Grayson community. I have seen my children grow consistently year after year in a critical and analytical way."
He wasn't alone in his enthusiasm about the schools his children have attended. Others also voiced their opinions Thursday night during the fourth of five GCPS area board meetings. Hundreds of parents, teachers, students and administrators from District 1 packed the auditorium of Archer High School.
District 1 Representative Carole Boyce thanked the group for showing up.
"We appreciate you being here tonight and coming together as a community, and (these area board meetings) are the best way to do it," Boyce said.
The meeting offered a once-a-year opportunity for parents like Walker to address the entire board of education close to home.
Malinda Tanner, the parent of a student at Dyer Elementary, told the board that she was appreciative for the GCPS Reading Recovery Program. "I believe the program has increased my son's comprehension," Tanner said.
The school district has been offering the supplementary education program, Reading Recovery, since 1994.
Melissa Corley, who has three children attending Harbins Elementary, said she appreciates the "good job" teachers and administrators do at the school.
Corley's children used to be in private school, but she took them out. "The education my children are now receiving is top-notch, and I do not have any need to send them back to private school," she said.
District 1 includes: Archer High, Bay Creek Middle, Cedar Hill Elementary, Cooper Elementary, Couch Middle, Crews Middle, Dacula Elementary, Dacula High, Dacula Middle, Dyer Elementary, Fort Daniel Elementary, Freeman's Mill Elementary, Grace Snell Middle, Grayson Elementary, Grayson High, Harbins Elementary, Hooper Renwick School, Lawrenceville Elementary, Lovin Elementary, Magill Elementary, McConnell Middle, Mulberry Elementary, Norton Elementary, Oakland Meadow School, Richards Middle, Rosebud Elementary, Starling Elementary, Trip Elementary and Winn Holt Elementary.
