BUFORD -- A 79-year-old man is wanted for stealing a bulldozer last month before he abandoned the equipment along Interstate 985 in Buford.
Leon Benton, an Atlanta resident, was accused in an arrest warrant filed on March 25 for stealing a 1986 Caterpillar 963 Crawler/Loader from Dekalb County on March 15. A Gwinnett County Police report said the equipment was found overturned at mile marker 3 on the shoulder along 985 southbound chained on a flatbed trailer. A towing company told police it was left there overnight.
No one was at the scene when an officer arrived, but it appeared to the officer that the bulldozer had just been loaded based on tracks in the dirt nearby.
An officer wasn't able to contact Benton, but found paperwork in the vehicle with his name on it.
"Since Benton's truck and trailer were used to transport the stolen equipment, he is the only suspect at this time," a police report said.
Gwinnett jail records did not list Benton in custody on Wednesday afternoon.
