Gladiators defenseman Sacha Guimond was named the ECHL's Defenseman of the Year on Wednesday.
Guimond led all ECHL defensemen with 49 points (12 goals, 37 assists) in 58 games in Gwinnett and San Francisco. His efforts earned him a selection to the ECHL all-rookie team and the all-ECHL first team this season. The 22-year-old was also a runner-up for rookie of the year, which went to South Carolina goalie Ryan Zapolski.
For the Gladiators, the free-wheeling defenseman had five goals and 19 assists in 25 games. Prior to being acquired by Gwinnett in a trade with San Francisco on Jan. 15, Guimond skated in 33 games with the Bulls and had 25 points.
The Ville-Marie, Quebec, native has been called up to the American Hockey League three times this season. He skated in four games with the Norfolk Admirals and two games with the Worcester Sharks.
Last season with Bale-Comeau Drakkar, Guimond posted 41 points (nine goals, 32 assists) in 65 games in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
Guimond is the second Gwinnett blueliner to win the honor. Jon Awe was named defensemen of the year in 2007 with 56 points (24 goals, 32 assists) in 60 games.
