Eugene (Butch) McGill, age 69, of Snellville, Georgia, after a nearly four year battle with lung cancer, passed away Saturday, September 29, 2012 peacefully at home with family and friends at his side. To Butch everyday was an opportunity to do something good. He never complained or indulged in self-pity, only wanting to go quietly into the good night. Butch was born in Screven County, Georgia, December 30, 1942 on his father’s 25th birthday. He was the son on the late Gene McGill and Betty McGill of Lincolnton. Butch grew up in Lincolnton, GA and was a star high school athlete. He was a member of the first Lincoln County State Championship Football team of 1960. He played freshman football at Furman University in Greenville, SC and was educated at the University of Georgia where he earned a B.A. in Business Administration. After years of traveling in industrial sales, Butch tried his hand at several occupations including a dream he always had of opening and operating a barbecue restaurant. He found his love in designing and installing marble and tile. The McGill Tiling Company was his pride and joy and homes throughout the southeast have benefited from his work. In the last few years, Butch became very interested in the stock market and took many classes to learn how to trade. An avid UGA football fan, Butch followed the team until this season when he became too weak to attend. Butch was a man of honor, integrity, a loyal and honest friend and business man. Butch leaves to morn his passing his wife of 48 years, Ann Holloway McGill; daughter, Dr. Shannon Anne McGill, Atlanta, GA; mother, Betty McGill, Lawrenceville/Lincolnton, GA; brother, Curtis (Lydia) McGill, Snellville, GA; sister, Cherry (Tony) Rowland, Lincolnton, GA; sister-in-law, Hazel (Billy) Snellings, Appling, GA; mother-in law, Evelyn Holloway, Appling, GA; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and business acquaintances.
