SUWANEE -- Gwinnett County Public Schools recently was honored for an annual event that recognizes the work of outstanding students in the county's technical education programs.
Each spring, GCPS holds a special event that honors its top technical education students from each high school with the final selection being the county's Technical Education Student of the Year.
In addition, the event recognizes the district's work to prepare students for college and careers.
During the recent Georgia Employer Committee Annual State Conference, the local initiative garnered state attention and the organization's project of the year award.
Accepting the award on behalf of the district was Carla Steele, coordinator of work-based learning.
Led by Chair Chuck Little, human resources director for Atlanta Electrical Contractors Association, the Gwinnett Employer Committee provides an ongoing communication link between the Georgia Department of Labor and the employer community.
Business leaders and owners, who comprise the committee, donate time to support fundraising activities for the purpose of giving back.
"The Department of Labor Employer Committee has been a strong partner with GCPS for many years," said Jody Reeves, GCPS director of technical education. "Their partnership has enabled us to provide scholarships for our future workforce as well as provided input into our programs."
During the partnership between the Gwinnett Employer Committee and GCPS' department of technical education, computer science and work-based learning, $10,000 has been donated to fund scholarships for local technical education students.
