Last week: Had a bye

Mountain View got back in the win column last week and Collins Hill got a break, something both teams needed.

The Eagles took the extra time to work on correcting the early-season penalty woes and the Bears got a chance to build some confidence, especially offensively, against Habersham Central.

“(We had) two 80-yard drives in the second half (and) the fact that we were able to basically sustain the drive at the end of the game and not give the ball back to their offense,” Mountain View head coach Doug Giacone said. “We had that opportunity against Pebblebrook, Week 2, and were not able to do that.”

That’s the “steady growth” Giacone is looking for from his Bears, who play a selection of young and inexperienced players. Against Habersham, Kielan Whitner, a two-way sophomore, caught a touchdown pass and picked off a ball in the end zone.

“He did an awesome job,” Giacone said.

And Collins Hill keeps working to erase the opening-week loss to Central Gwinnett that head coach Kevin Reach said was “the worst we’ve played since I’ve been here.”

The Eagles improved against Dacula and played a strong game against Habersham leading into the bye. Quarterback Brett Sheehan continues to grow in the offense with receivers Grant McDonald and Julian Williams.

“We’re getting into region play now and we have to put those mistakes behind us,” Reach said. “We have to play four good quarters. If we can do that, we can be successful. I think our kids are excited. They understand the mistakes they’ve made and I think they are excited about the rest of the season.”
