Dacula driver killed in collision with semi

LAWRENCEVILLE — Charges are pending in an early morning collision Thursday that killed a Dacula man whose vehicle became wedged beneath a tractor-trailer, police said.

The two-vehicle accident happened about 6:30 a.m. on Ga. Highway 316 at Hurricane Trail near Lawrenceville.

Gwinnett police said Anvir Karim, 68, was transported to an area hospital but died from injuries sustained in the collision. No other injuries were reported.

A preliminary investigation has shown that 34-year-old Latora Barrett, of Columbia, S.C., was headed east on the highway and turned the tractor-trailer left onto Hurricane Trail in front of Karim, who was driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter.

Karim was unable to avoid the collision, striking the side of the trailer and becoming trapped underneath. He had to be extricated by emergency personnel, Ritter said.

“This investigation continues and charges are pending,” he said.
