NORCROSS -- A Dacula man allegedly plowed over traffic pylons at high speeds to avoid rush-hour traffic before causing a chain-reaction crash that killed a motorcyclist Monday.
Kenneth Griffin, 42, is charged with felony vehicular homicide and a list of traffic citations in the five-vehicle crash that killed a Harley Davidson rider from McDonough at the Beaver Ruin Road scene.
According to Griffin's arrest warrants, he drove a 2006 BMW 325i over yellow traffic pylons, used to block vehicles from a center turn lane, then sped west more than 300 feet down the turn lane without braking. He was attempting to avoid heavy traffic at about 5 p.m., the warrants state.
Motorcyclist Brandon Roy, 38, was stopped at a left-turn traffic light at Interstate 85, along with three other vehicles damaged in the crash. Griffin and the drivers of two other cars were hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
In addition to vehicular homicide, Griffin is charged with reckless driving, following too closely, improper lane change, central lane violation, failure to obey signs or control devices and defacing a traffic control device.
Griffin was booked Tuesday at the Gwinnett County Jail, where he remains without bond. He's scheduled to appear Wednesday at a probable cause hearing in Gwinnett Magistrate Court.
