No. 6 Young Harris hands GGC men's soccer first loss

YOUNG HARRIS — Young Harris College rallied for two second-half goals to take a 2-1 men’s soccer non-conference victory over Georgia Gwinnett College on Sunday afternoon at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.

The Mountain Lions, who are ranked No. 6 in the latest NSCAA NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, improved to 7-1 while the Grizzlies, who are in their first year of existence, suffered their first loss of the season and fell to 6-1-1.

GGC took a 1-0 lead at the 21:06 mark on Tom Butler’s team-leading 11th strike of the season after teammate Johan Sanchez served the ball into the box from the left side.

The Mountain Lions equalized the match at the 62:58 mark when Ilija Ilic scored his fifth goal of the season after Niall McCabe, who leads Young Harris with nine assists, served the ball into the box from the right side. Young Harris took a 2-1 lead after Andreas Pechmann converted his second penalty kick of the season less than four minutes later after GGC goalkeeper Greg Hartley was issued a red card for striking a Young Harris player in the box.

Freshman Jordan Bradshaw registered five saves in goal for the Mountain Lions in his first work of the season while Hartley and his replacement Iain Struckmeyer each tallied two saves for the Grizzlies.
