GRAYSON -- Did you know the city of Grayson used to be called the city of Trip? Do you know why?

For those who do and those who don't, the upcoming Old Fashioned Fall Fair and Open House offers a chance to learn more about the southeastern Gwinnett County town.

Those who visit the event, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 at the arts and history center, can get their fill of local historical trivia as well as homemade baked goods.

Arts and History Center Director Barbara Hinkle said the inaugural gathering also will feature windchimes, handmade pillows, bird houses, crochet items, Christmas decor, jewelry and hand-painted windows.

"We're always trying to come up with activities that relate to history," Hinkle said. "We thought it would be nice to have a festival featuring an old fashioned theme."

During the festival, Hinkle said copies of "From Trip to Grayson," an historical cookbook will be on sale.

As to why the city of Grayson used to be the city of Trip?

"In 1881 the founder of our town established a post office in his store, and the post office was given the name Trip," Hinkle said. "The store owner commented that our location here was a trip between Loganville and Lawrenceville."

The Grayson Arts and History Center is located at 2070 Rosebud Road, Grayson.
