JEKYLL ISLAND — The Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer team dropped a close 2-1 decision Sunday to strong NCAA Division II squad Palm Beach Atlantic University in a neutral site contest at the Jekyll Island Sports Complex.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, GGC came back to tie things midway through the second half before PBA put away the deciding tally in the game’s final minutes.
The Sailfish improved to 5-1 on the year while the Grizzlies’ record levels out at 4-4.
“It was a tough result today as it was a very closely-played game,” said GGC head coach Domenic Martelli. “After they went on top, we equalized on a beautiful goal with great execution. We just had a lapse at the end that cost us, as that made the difference in the game that featured a lot of chances on both sides.”
With GGC trailing 25 minutes into the second half, Berkmar grad Amairani Almanza and Amanda Dale teamed up on a well-executed strike to tie the game, Dale’s fourth score of the season.
Grizzlies goalkeeper Mo Gutierrez made several stops in net, but the Sailfish took advantage late in the closing minutes to post the winning score.
The loss was GGC’s second one-goal defeat in three days as the team has held its opponents to two goals or less in six of eight contests this season.
Georgia Gwinnett returns home to face Bob Jones University next Saturday, Sep. 29, at 2 p.m. in Lawrenceville. The Grizzlies are 4-1 in home games this season.
