NORCROSS -- Following a tough loss to Norcross last week, North Gwinnett used great defense and a dominant second-quarter effort to triumph over Meadowcreek 45-20 on Friday night.
The Bulldogs' only moment of concern was an opening possession interception by quarterback Michael Haynes.
However, after gaining possession in North territory, Meadowcreek (0-3, 0-1, 7-AAAAAA) failed to convert the opportunity and North (3-1, 1-1, 7AAAAAA) took over from there.
"It took us a little while to get dialed in," North Gwinnett head coach Bob Sphire said.
"I thought they started executing in the second quarter, we had a nice mix of the run and the pass game, defense forced some turnovers ... it's always good to get a scoring contribution on defense."
North accumulated over 300 yards of offense in the first half as it turned a 14-point first quarter margin into a 45-0 halftime lead.
Haynes shook off the early turnover to pass for 186 yards and three touchdowns, including a 65-yard rainbow to Caleb Scott for the first of many scores in the second quarter.
"(Haynes) has played really well all year you know he continues to make good decisions... he made a couple of creative plays when he had to scramble... he is really doing a great job for us." Sphire said.
North scored 31 points in the quarter, which included an interception return for a touchdown by Jalen Brooks in the final seconds of the half.
Nick Andryusky rushed for 45 yards in the game and scored his third TD in the second quarter as North Gwinnett notched its first region win of the year.
Meadowcreek was held to 112 total yards, but did manage to score a season- high 20 points thanks to a pair of scores in the final quarter.
