In reference to Cal Thomas' view of Mitt Romney's leaked tape ("President's failures out in the open," Sept. 20, 8A): In Mr. Thomas's eyes the seriousness of the meaning behind the statement is dismissed because someone "leaked" it? Continuing with Mr. Thomas's logic, does that mean if someone speeds on the highway and does not get caught, or if someone steals and doesn't get caught it is OK?
It is also interesting that the far right had to go back 14 years to find something on President Obama to try to "one up" and deflect this situation. My take is, 14 years, are you serious? Regardless of the meaning behind what was said back in 1998, was the world situation the same then as today?
The fact is Romney made the statement and if Romney stands behind it, then the future of our armed forces, senior citizens, those in assisted living, and hard working individuals that earn minimal income resulting in no income tax will have their lives changed forever.
If Romney really believes all these people do not take personal responsibility for their lives, that feel they are entitled to the government taking care of their lives, he is really out of touch. Even President George W. Bush's theme "We are all one, when some are hurting, we all are hurting, we need to take care of each other" is 180 degrees from Romney's belief.
It is time that every person, including newspaper contributors become an agent of change of the political rhetoric that distracts and divides this nation. It is time we all demand both parties begin discussing the real issues facing our country. This country need solutions articulated into real action items; we should expect and settle for nothing less.
