Last week: Lost to Norcross 31-21

Meadowcreek Mustangs (7-AAAAAA)

Coach: Deario Grimmage

Record: 0-2, 0-0 region

Last week: Had a bye

After looking at the tape from last week’s loss to Norcross, North Gwinnett head coach Bob Sphire could see why his team lost.

A missed block and a bad read on offense or a missed tackle and bad alignment on defense added up to be too many mistakes for the Bulldogs.

“We have to learn from that game,” Sphire said. “We made a lot of mistakes we have to correct.”

North had its 22-game region winning streak snapped, but will get a chance to start a new run tonight. The Bulldogs travel to Meadowcreek to face a Mustangs program that is winless this year and lost to North 71-6 a year ago.

“I’m totally focused on all the things we have to do as a football team to get better no matter who the opponent is,” Sphire said.

Sphire has been pleased with first-year starting quarterback Michael Haynes. Despite throwing two interceptions in last week’s loss, the senior has been solid this year.

“He’s running the offense well and has made some plays with his feet,” Sphire said. “He’s doing a whole lot at that position.”

Almonzo Brown and Nate Brown had big games at receiver for North last week with each hauling in a touchdown.

“Those two are starting to make some plays,” Sphire said.

Last meeting: North won 71-6 last year
