Madison County Red Raiders (8-AAAA)
Coach: Chris Smith
Record: 0-3
Last week: Lost to North Oconee 49-0
Lanier Longhorns (8-AAAA)
Coach: Billy Wells
Record: 2-1
Last week: Beat Franklin County 23-0
It’s Military Appreciation Night at Lanier, but it’s also noteworthy for another reason — it’s the Longhorns’ first-ever region game. They enter with confidence after a strong 2-1 start, beating Oconee County and Franklin County the past two games after a tough loss to Apalachee in the opener.
“The kids are learning what it takes to play on Friday night,” Lanier head coach Billy Wells said. “You have to play a full 48 minutes. You really have to prepare. Every play matters. We talk to them about improving every week and if we can do that we’ll be in good shape.”
The defense was phenomenal last week in a shutout of Madison County, with Bryton Bergman tallying seven tackles (six solos), three for losses, a sack and a quarterback pressure. Ricky Viengxay (nine tackles), Brandon Ramos (seven tackles) and Jesse Landers (seven tackles) also played well.
That unit will be tested by a Madison offense led by talented passer T.J. Skelton. Lanier also will be shorthanded in the secondary as starting cornerback Grey Lee Williams is out for a few weeks with a lacerated ankle.
“(Madison’s) got a pretty good quarterback and a spread offense, they throw the ball around a good bit,” Wells said.
Last meeting: First meeting
Directions to Lanier High School: From I-85, go west on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road and
