Kiwanis Club, Co-Op raise $10K at golf tourney

BUFORD -- The weather cooperated on Wednesday for a turnout of 60 golfers for the annual golf tournament put on by the Kiwanis Club of North Gwinnett.

The Kiwanis Club raises money to donate to local schools for college scholarships. This year, the club partnered for the first time with the North Gwinnett Co-op and the tournament at Legacy on Lanier Golf Club brought in about $10,000 in gross proceeds, said Susan Radford, the Kiwanis golf tournament chair.Last year, the Kiwanis chapter donated about $18,000 to Buford, North Gwinnett, Mill Creek, Dacula and Lanier high schools.

The co-op serves Buford, Sugar Hill and Suwanee and provides food, clothing, electricity, heat, water and prescription medication assistance to senior citizens and low income families.

The co-op, a 22-year-old organization which began in the basement of a church, moved into a new building last week on Commerce Drive in Buford. It previously was in a space donated by the city of Buford.

"We've always supported the co-op; we just thought we would add them to the signage and advertising this year," Radford said.

The low net score for the tournament was 54 by the team of Brandon Bisig, Justin Bisig, Jeremy Borak and Ed Manning. The low gross score was 60 by the team of Tim Harris, Kent Henderson and Chris Housley.

The golf tournament, Valentine Dance and Vidalia Onion sale are the Kiwanis Club's biggest fundraisers each year.

The Kiwanis Club meets each Tuesday at the Peoples Bank and Trust in Buford.

$10,000 "gross" is far from $10,000 "net." If they donated $18,000 last year, which is net, that means this year was a bust!
