Cops: Lasseter's daughter-in-law brought gun to courthouse

LAWRENCEVILLE -- The wife of John Fanning -- the son involved in the bribery case that brought down former Commissioner Shirley Lasseter -- was arrested this week for allegedly bringing a loaded gun to the Gwinnett County courthouse.

Gwinnett County jail records show Dacula resident Lesley Lynn Fanning was arrested Wednesday and charged with carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a deadly weapon at a public gathering and possession of drugs not in their original container. She was released the following day on $24,800 bond.

According to an incident report, Fanning attempted to pass through the screening station at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center at about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday. A sheriff's deputy reportedly noticed a handgun in her purse as it passed through the X-ray machine.

The pistol, a magazine and 10 rounds of ammunition were confiscated, as well as a number of prescription drugs, officials said.

A single prescription bottle allegedly found in her purse contained "various forms of oxycodone, hydrocodone, amphetamine, Prozac and Motrin," the report said.

Lt. Jim Casey from the sheriff's department's court security division said Fanning was at the courthouse to attend a hearing, but was unsure about the nature of that hearing. Fanning and her husband are currently going through a divorce and a custody battle.

According to jail records, Lesley Fanning was also arrested in February on aggravated assault and battery charges.

John Fanning, a former member of Gwinnett's zoning board of appeals, was federally charged along with his mother in June. Both he and Lasseter have pleaded guilty to bribery charges. Fanning also has pleaded guilty to cocaine trafficking and is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday.

Lasseter was sentenced earlier this month to 33 months in prison.

Mother and son told undercover agents that bribes could buy their approval on zoning requests in Gwinnett, specifically for a proposed pawn shop on Boggs Road. Fanning also made a trip to New York with accomplice Carl Cain, during which the duo picked up four kilograms of sham cocaine to bring back to Atlanta.

Court records say she was there for a custody hearing. Left to go to lunch, picked up the gun from a friend (even though she didn't have a permit). Then forgot she had it in her handbag when she returned to court. What???? Then the misc. drugs not in the original container. Grandma is headed to jail, dad is waiting to be sentenced and mom now has charges pending. Feel bad for the children involved, Hope there is someone on the mother's side of the family that can step in to care for the children.

It's a family affair apparently! She will walk of course, She was very disturbed I'm sure her attorney will say. I'm disturbed by her family's actions, and I don't have to eat Sunday lunch with them!
