Wesleyan Wolves (6-AA)
Coach: Franklin Pridgen
Last week: Beat Salem 38-19
Stone Mountain Pirates (6-AAAA)
Coach: Dante Ferguson
Last week: Beat North Atlanta 21-14
Wesleyan steps up to play a Class AAAA school Friday, but that’s nothing new. The Wolves had a big second half last week and pulled away from AAAA Salem for an impressive win.
“I was so pleased with our effort and performance last week against a very talented Salem team especially in the second half,” Wesleyan head coach Franklin Pridgen said. “So many positives came out of that game for us — we gained invaluable experience and confidence facing a tough opponent and matching them score for score in the first half and then shutting them out in the second. It was exactly what the doctor ordered for us.”
Quarterback Will Anderson completed 21 of 28 passes for 285 yards and four touchdowns against Salem. Receivers Jahmai Jones (five catches for 148 yards, TD) and Sam Carver (seven catches for 74 yards, two TDs) also had big games.
Stone Mountain’s only loss this season was in the opener to Greater Atlanta Christian, Wesleyan’s Region 6-AA rival.
“This week we face another uphill battle against a team not too different from Salem,” Pridgen said. “In fact, the Salem game might prove to be the best preparation possible for Stone Mountain, which also has fine athletes and a lot of speed. Coach Ferguson does a great job with his team and they will no doubt be ready to play Friday. We need to get off to a better start defensively this week than we did against Salem and take so much pressure off the offense in the first half.”
