This was one of the biggest upsets of last season. Mill Creek entered the game 3-0 and averaging 35 points per game and Mountain View was in just its second true varsity football season. The Bears were 1-2 with their only win over an even newer Lanier team.

Then the upset came. The Bears defense silenced Mill Creek, allowing just one touchdown and the offense snuck in just enough points for the biggest win in Mountain View history.

“It’s not really been a hard week to try and get your kids motivated top play,” Mountain View head coach Doug Giacone said. “They are excited.”

Up the road, Mill Creek is trying to quell the memories of last year by turning tangible goals.

“We aren’t going to get caught up in any of the distractions of what happened last year,” Mill Creek head coach Shannon Jarvis said. “They’ve been intent on getting ready to play. More importantly than anything that happened last year, this is our first region game. We stared 0-1 in the region last year and our goal is to start 1-0 in the region this year. We can’t make it more complicated than that.”

Mill Creek, despite the number of points allowed, is turning to its defense this season as the Hawks break in new quarterback Daniel David. The defense starts with the linebackers, anchored by senior Patrick Dike.

“Our linebackers have played well so far,” Jarvis said.

Mountain View and new head coach Giacone got its first win last week as the Bears work back from preseason injuries and learning a new system.

“We’ve had some incremental progress,” Giacone said. “We are working on the here and now with our guys.”

Last meeting: Mountain View won 9-7 last season
