Franklin County Lions (8-AAA)
Coach: Tommy Welch
Last week: Beat Madison County 20-12
Lanier Longhorns (8-AAAA)
Coach: Billy Wells
Last week: Beat Oconee County 17-14
Both teams rebounded from season-opening losses for quality wins a week ago, with Lanier winning a road test at Oconee County.
“For us, it was a plus to see our kids in that kind of back-and-forth game and to see them respond in the second half, eliminate mistakes and find a way to win,” Lanier head coach Billy Wells said.
Linebackers Jesse Landers and Izzy Sam led a solid defensive effort against Oconee, while Onyx Berrios and Grey Lee Williams also stood out. Wells praised Williams for his pass coverage, and the Longhorns will need more of that kind of play this week against an offense triggered by Lion quarterback Ben Cheek.
“It’s the second week in a row we play a quarterback who can really deliver the ball,” Wells said. “But they’ve got a good running back, too. They’ve got a good balance.”
Taylor Grant (13-for-20, 249 yards, two touchdowns) had another big game on offense for Lanier in the Oconee win, while Marty Sanders and Jahbril Jones were his top targets. Sanders had five catches for 137 yards and a score.
This is the final tuneup for the Longhorns before they enter their first-ever region game next Friday vs. Madison County.
