LAWRENCEVILLE — The Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer team used goals from three different players to post its third straight shutout win on Wednesday in a 3-0 victory over Truett-McConnell College on the Grizzly Soccer Field.

Sophomore Mary Vernetti (a Grayson grad), junior Amanda Dale and freshman Mackenzie Bailey each scored for the Grizzlies, who moved to 4-2 on the season with the win. The loss also dropped Truett-McConnell to 4-2.

The Grizzlies outshot the Bears by a slim 15-14 margin, but made their opportunities count on the attack.

With under three minutes remaining in a scoreless first half, Bailey freed up Cadyn Spruell into the far corner. Spruell sent a one-touch cross onto Vernetti’s head in traffic and GGC’s leading scorer put the ball past Bears goalkeeper Emily Bechke for an impressive opening score.

Then, 13 minutes into the second period, Dale picked up her third goal of the season after converting a breakaway chance for the 2-0 lead.

The Grizzlies finished the scoring in the 68th minute on a free kick situation. Defender Kelsey Griswold of Shiloh sent a looping ball into the box that Vernetti headed on to an open Bailey, who finished with one touch for the score.

Georgia Gwinnett goalkeeper Mo Gutierrez, a Dacula grad, made six key saves in net to preserve the 3-0 win.

The Grizzlies have now outscored their opponents, 7-0, since a Sept. 1 loss at Brenau, and improved to 4-1 in home games on the season.

“It was really a complete team win in all phases tonight,” Grizzlies head coach Domenic Martelli said. “We were able to absorb a lot of their chances as they have a lot of good players who are dangerous.

“After a sluggish start in the first half, we scored an absolutely beautiful goal. I don’t think we could have worked on anything better than that. That alone really took us through halftime and carried us into the second half, where it showed. Mo played great in goal, making a couple of big saves. All of these things pushed us forward to get the result.”

NOTE: The women's game scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 15, at home against Georgia Southwestern has been postponed. The game may be made up at a later date this season. The Grizzly women are next in scheduled action on Sept. 21, on the road in Savannah. The men’s team is still slated to play at 2 p.m. this Saturday at home against Bob Jones University.
