SAVANNAH — The Georgia Gwinnett men’s soccer team used a second-half score Sunday from Berkmar grad Martin Lugo to top the Savannah College of Art and Design 1-0, capturing the SCAD Tournament on the Bees’ home field outside Savannah.
The Grizzlies (3-0-1) remain undefeated after two weekend wins, their first road games of the season.
Mill Creek grad Zach Mruk played a ball through to Lugo that the freshman forward buried midway through the second half Sunday to produce the deciding score.
Goalkeeper Greg Hartley turned away the Bees’ attempts to tie throughout the final minutes to preserve the victory.
“It was a great win by our boys today,” said GGC head coach Steve DeCou. “SCAD is a high-quality opponent and to go to their field and win is an accomplishment.”
The Bees (1-3) had just beaten 16th-ranked William Carey on Saturday by two goals.
“Winning our first two road matches made for a great weekend,” DeCou added. “Since we are unable to play in postseason competition, it is nice to be able to win a trophy this year.”
As a first-year member in the NAIA, the Grizzlies are not eligible to compete in postseason play.
GGC returns home to host Bob Jones University on Saturday at the Grizzly Soccer Field at 2 p.m.
