GGC men, women score soccer victories

For the first time since opening day, the Georgia Gwinnett College soccer teams both won on the same day Saturday.

The women hosted Huntingdon and used a 40-shot performance to get a 2-0 win.

After taking a 14-2 advantage in shots in the first half, GGC piled up 26 more chances in the second half while yielding just three total shots defensively all game long.

The Grizzlies struck first on a rainy and wet afternoon. Amairani Almanza collected a loose ball and popped it through the outstretched arms of Hawks goalkeeper Jenny Burnash five minutes into the game for a 1-0 GGC lead.

In the second half, Allison Fernandez sent in a corner kick and Blake DiSpigna knocked home a ball in traffic to make it 2-0. Kelsey Griswold picked up an assist on the goal.

Then Grizzly men powered to an 8-0 victory over University of St. Francis (Ill.) in the first day of the SCAD Tourament in Savannah.

Tied 0-0 at halftime, the Grizzlies (2-0-1) used two second-half goals from leading scorer Tom Butler and two more from forward Martin Lugo to break the game open.

Thiago Santos and Victor de Lima each scored and assisted on a goal in the half.

After de Lima opened the scoring, Butler notched his team-leading seventh and eighth scores for a 3-0 GGC lead.

Lugo made it 4-0 before Andres Molano scored his third goal of the year. Alejandro Duque and Santos each picked up their first scores of the season as GGC poured it on, while Lugo added his second of the day.

The Fighting Saints fell to 0-3 on the year with the loss.
