LAWRENCEVILLE -- Gwinnett police are hosting a job fair Saturday in hopes of hiring about 30 officers to fill an academy class that begins in December.
The fair will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gwinnett County Police Training Center at 854 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville.
Without any former training, police officer trainees can earn a $35,023 starting salary. Applicants already state-certified can make as much as $37,648.
Currently, the department -- a nationally certified agency -- employs 713 sworn officers. Specialized units include SWAT, park police , DUI task force, a gang unit, bomb squad and an aviation unit.
Those who can't attend the fair are encouraged to apply online at www.gwinnettpolicejobs.com, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter.
Following a screening, qualified applicants will be able to take an entry level test on Saturday and possibly start the background process. The written test is waived for applicants with prior law enforcement experience, military service or college degrees.
