DULUTH -- At first, the store manager told police, she thought the robber was joking, but then she saw the handgun, which convinced her otherwise.
The manager at a Rite Aid pharmacy on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Duluth was shuffled into her office on Aug. 18, where the gunman took cash from a safe and registers and fled with about $1,500, police said.
Investigators believe the robber -- who had cracked a joke with the manager before asking for cigarettes and pulling the gun -- was 31-year-old Cumming resident Edward Kim, according to a report released Friday.
The robbery happened about 8 a.m. as the manager was opening the pharmacy. After gathering the cash, she told police the robber asked her to wait five minutes before calling police. She called as soon as he fled to the parking lot, according to a Duluth police report.
Kim allegedly touched two cash registers during the heist, and his SUV was caught on surveillance cameras as he left the parking lot. The victim later picked Kim from a photographic line-up, police said.
Kim has a criminal record in several metro Atlanta counties, including Gwinnett, where he served time for trespassing in 2010, records show.
In Gwinnett, Kim is charged with armed robbery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.
Duluth police spokesman Maj. Don Woodruff said Kim is currently being held in other jurisdictions after being charged with other crimes. Further details were not available Friday.
