WINDER-BARROW BULLDOGGS (8-AAAAA)
Coach: David Wagner
Record: 0-1
Last week: Lost to Jackson Co. 21-10
MONROE AREA PURPLE HURRICANES (8-AAAA)
Coach: Matt Fligg
Record: 1-0
Last week: Beat Loganville 50-7
The Bulldoggs were handed another tough defeat in last week’s opener, their 25th straight loss dating back to October of 2009.
But the Bulldoggs can’t afford to feel sorry for themselves with Monroe Area next on the horizon.
The Purple Hurricanes, who have surged into the playoffs the last two seasons, come into tonight’s game off a convincing win over Loganville behind 216 yards and two touchdowns from running back Kwan Brooks.
They are also a longtime rival, though the schools haven’t met since 2009, when a Winder-Barrow win evened the all-time series at 28-all.
While the Purple Hurricanes won’t make life any easier for the Bulldoggs this evening, they do take some bright spots from last week’s loss into Friday's game.
Most notable among those positives is the multi-faceted contributions of Chandon Sullivan, who accumulated 175 all-purpose yards against Jackson County, as well as quarterback Christian Hodge, who threw for 103 yards and added a TD on the ground.
But the Bulldoggs must do a better job of hanging onto the football after four turnovers spelled doom for them last week.
Last meeting: Winder-Barrow won 48-41 in 2009
Directions to Monroe Area High School: Highway 11 to Monroe, cross bridge then turn left at first light onto Marable street; turn right onto the fifth street, which is Bryant Road, then turn left at first stop sign.
