Archer Tigers (8-AAAAAA)
Coach: Andy Dyer
Last week: Beat Mountain View 46-7
East Coweta Indians (3-AAAAAA)
Coach: Clint Wade
Last week: Beat Henry County 35-7
Archer head coach Andy Dyer wanted to take his young program on its first significant road trip and he chose a familiar location to him. Dyer worked as an East Coweta assistant in 1996 — current Indians head coach Clint Wade was the team’s defensive coordinator back then — before returning to Gwinnett to coach.
“We felt like our kids really haven’t been out of Gwinnett yet, so it was time to travel,” Dyer said. “It was time to get on a travel schedule and still go out and compete.”
The road trip also brings a challenging opponent in East Coweta, which has made the playoffs 15 straight seasons. The Indians graduated a big senior class off last year’s team, but do return talented back Dee Godfrey, who scored three TDs last week in a win over Henry County.
Archer has a pretty good backfield of its own, too. Both Sean Fowler and Ernest Alexander topped the 100-yard rushing mark last week in an impressive season opener against Mountain View. It was a much better performance than the Tigers’ scrimmage vs. Collins Hill.
“We did some things very well,” Dyer said of last week’s win. “But we also have some mistakes we’ve got to correct and not do again.”
