There’s a first time for everything and Lanier took that first leap last week.
After playing a junior varsity schedule to build the program from scratch head coach Billy Wells led his Lanier team into varsity play for the first time and found it a daunting task in a 21-11 loss to Apalachee. But, they can only go forward from there.
“What we learned was that a lot of our players played their first varsity game last Friday night,” Well said. “What we learned more than anything was that we did have some successes last Friday night. We know we did some things well.
“Game 2 experience will be a big plus for us.”
The Longhorns did rack up more than 300 yards of offense and the defense improved in the second half led by the play of Izzy Sam with 14 tackles and a pair of quarterback pressures and Onyx Berrios, who had an interception, caused and recovered a fumble and made four tackles. On offense he had four catches for 65 yards.
“The guys who had played before are the guys who made the most plays us,” Wells said.
Against Oconee County, the Longhorns face a team that scored 39 points in its first game and are led by 6-foot-5 quarterback Conner White in his second season under center.
“They like to let him throw the ball around,” Wells said.
But at Lanier the focus remains on the Longhorns.
“We’ve got our work cut out for us,” Well said. “Just learning the differences of Friday night than a Thursday night.”
