The Hand That Rocks the Cradle
Blu-ray (R)
Movie: 3 and 1/2 out of 4 stars
Disc: 3 out of 4 stars
Equal parts cheesy melodrama and white-knuckle psychological thriller, "Cradle" was to some degree a retooling of "Fatal Attraction" which had come out five years earlier. Rebecca De Mornay turns in the performance of her career as Peyton, an outwardly genteel nanny hired by a couple (Matt McCoy and Annabella Sciorra) who is anything but. Able to fool everyone save for the couples' mentally-impaired handyman (Ernie Hudson), Peyton's carefully executed revenge plot keeps the audience on edge the entire time and the character achieves a "love to hate them" level of vitriol rarely matched since. Sadly the new budget-conscious Blu-ray offers nothing new in the way of extras, but the audio and visual upgrades make this a definite must-watch if not own title.
Technical specs: aspect ratio: Widescreen (1.85:1/1080p), audio: English (Dolby DTS-HD MA 5.1,), French and Spanish (Dolby 2.0) subtitles: English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.
