GAB: Swimming class to hold patriotic show

LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Collins Hill Park Aquatic Center is hosting the fourth presentation of a synchronized swimming performance as a tribute to veterans, other members of the military and their families.

The event, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, will feature a non-competitive synchronized swimming group consisting of girls between the ages of 8 and 14 "who love to swim and are interested in furthering their swimming skills in an artistic and creative way."

The class is directed by recreation program leader Kathryn Ralston and taught by swim instructors Colleen Binkley, Emily Kiger and Lindsay Hardin and Bethany D'Alessandro.

During a 10-week session, swimmers are introduced to the fundamentals of the sport through the practice of the skills, patterns and movements associated with the discipline.

The performance on Saturday is free to everyone and will include a short reception following the performance.

Local FFA member gets national honor

LOGANVILLE -- Chasity Tompkins, a Future Farmers of America member representing the Loganville High School Chapter was recently selected as a recipient of the American FFA Degree, an honor bestowed upon a select group of individuals for academic and professional excellence.

The degree also honors FFA members who show "the utmost dedication to the organization through their desire to develop their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education."

To be eligible, FFA members must have earned and productively invested $7,500 through a supervised agricultural experience program in which they start, own or hold a professional position in an existing agricultural enterprise. Recipients must also complete 50 community service hours.

For the honor, Tompkins received a gold American FFA Degree Key and a certificate.

Church schedules grief counseling event

SNELLVILLE -- A program that aims to help individuals handle grief on holidays and special occasions is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Christian Life Center -- C209/210 located at Snellville United Methodist Church, 2428 Main Street E. (Hwy. 78), Snellville.
